Mercedes Benz Automatic Transmission Oil FE 236.15 is a modern OEM transmission oil for use in the Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission 7G-Tronic-Plus 722.9.
The 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission from Mercedes, also known under the internal designations NAG2+ or NAG2-FE (NAG stands for “New Automatic Transmission” and comes from german language), was introduced to the product range in 2010. This is a further development of the 7G-Tronic (NAG2), which had been available in almost all vehicle models up to that point, with a revised torque converter that achieves higher increased efficiency and thus fuel savings thanks to lower friction losses and reduced drag power. This is where the abbreviation “FE” comes from – it stands for Fuel Efficiency.

The big difference between MB 236.14 and 236.15 – Which transmission oil to buy?

In the course of optimizing the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission, Mercedes-Benz has adapted the transmission oil of the 7G-Tronic transmission! The difference between 7G-Tronic and 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission becomes essential when choosing the right automatic transmission oil for your Mercedes! While the original 7G-Tronic transmission required a transmission oil according to the Mercedes-Benz approval MB 236.14, the 7G-Tronic Plus uses an oil with lower viscosity which is approved according to MB 236.15.
So before choosing the automatic transmission oil, the following applies:

Make sure to determine whether your vehicle has a 7G-Tronic or 7G-Tronic+ automatic transmission. Transmission oils after MB 236.15 approval are not downward compatible with other transmission oils!

7G-Tronic and 7G-Tronic+ transmissions can be recognized by the following features:

• 7G-Tronic+ transmissions have the equipment code A89 for the reduced-friction torque converter on the data card and a transmission number from 2.834.527
• 7G-Tronic transmissions do not have the code A89. Gearbox numbers up to 2.834.526 are 7G-Tronic gearboxes

In order to determine exactly which automatic transmission oil has to be used for your vehicle, you should only refer to the information in your vehicle manual!

When to change Mercedes 7G-Tronic+ transmission oil?

For the oil change of the automatic transmission oil Mercedes-Benz prescribes partly different change intervals for the 7G-Tronic and 7G-Tronic Plus transmissions. We often differentiate here between the vehicle model or installed engine. Often (exceptions must be observed!) an oil change on the 7G-Tronic transmission is due after 50,000 km or 3 years.
With the improved 7G-Tronic+ transmission, change intervals are often longer: Here the prescribed change is usually due after 125,000 km or 5 years.
In order to determine exactly when the transmission oil in the automatic transmission of your vehicle should be changed, the information in the vehicle manual of your Mercedes must be observed.

MB 236.15 can also be used as transfer case oil

Beside the high importance of the Mercedes MB 236.15 approval in the field of application as automatic transmission oil, the application as transfer case oil is often wrongly pushed into the background, because a transmission oil according to the MB 236.15 approval is often required here as well, among others in the following models:

• Transfer cases in C-Class type 205, E-Class types 213 & 238, S-Class types 217, 222 & 223, CLS types 218 & 257, GLC type 253 and AMG GT type 290, in which the 725.0 transmission (9G-Tronic) is installed
• Transfer case in C-Class model 206, E-Class model 213, S-Class model 223 and CLS model 257, in which the 725.1 transmission (9G-Tronic) is installed
